Quality vs. Quantity in the Marching Arts

These are two different philosophies that produce different results.

At first thought, it would make sense to think that quality would be better than quantity, right? Well, what if I were to tell you that sometimes quantity can be better than quality??

Iā€™m not saying that quantity is better than quality all of the time of course. There are other times where quality is very much for the goal for groups within the activity. The long term goal is to always produce quality reps.

In the marching arts, it is always more fun to watch groups perform at a very high level of quality. Whether that be in person at a live show.... or on Youtube (Consider Blue Devils 2007 in the video below)! But sometimes it may take a number of reps to get to that point.

For example, to get your name known in the social media world of music, it is better to pump out a lot of content to be seen more often. The quality is not always as important in this case

If you have the approach of a perfectionist mindset, and that all content/reps have to be perfect, then the result would most likely be less content being produced.

This example can be directly applied to the marching arts believe it or not! In terms of reps of course.

What I wanted to present to you as food for thought is this: are there situations in the marching arts where quantity is greater than quality?

Watch the video below and let me know what you think!
