Learn How To Play Flam Drags and How To "Reset" Your Brain When You SUCK!
I love Flam Drags! I often tell the story of WHY I love Flam Drags and it's probably because it took more almost an entire year to be able to play them, while it took a friend of mine who joined our HS Drumline later than me maybe like a few days.
It was frustrating...but I eventually got it.
Now I play it pretty well IMO and it's definitely my favorite hybrid rudiment!
My experience is just another example that everyone's journey and learning curves are different. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter how long it takes for you to master something, as long as you are continually making progress!
And no, having negative thoughts like, "why can't I get it" or "I suck" will not help unless used in the right way! I guess I can talk more about that kind of thing later :)
Speaking of negative thoughts and having a downward spiral of negativity that can affect your playing, sometimes it helps just to stop playing for a bit, get your mind off of drumming, and then try again.
Almost every time I see a Student struggling and watch them play something progressively worse with every rep, I tell them to stop, think about something other than drumming, then try playing again.
99.99987% of the time they play better!
Think of it like resetting a computer.
If your computer is glitching, being slow or just not performing well...sometimes you just need to restart it and everything becomes magically fixed after that.
I don't know why that works from a technological perspective...but I know why it works for us human beings :P
