Here's How You Practice Drums Anytime, Anywhere and In Any Situation!

I learned how to practice at all times during high school.

As much as I loved having sticks in my hands, developing chops on a rubber practice pad, it’s not always practical to do this in so many situations.

Waiting in line at Disneyland…

Hanging out in a Library…

Eating dinner with friends and family…

Not saying you necessarily need to or want to practice in these situations, but if you wanted to get in some extra practice time, there is a way to do it during these situations.

So if you did want to practice, all you need are your hands. Hit the rhythms on your legs, on your chest, on your stomach…wherever and run some exercises, some show music or the newest etude.

You could also sing and count rhythms in your head and get some reps in to work on rhythmic spacing, timing and your overall comfort level in playing a new piece of music.

Of course, there would be limitations to this if there are some fast diddles or flams, but for the most part, there’s a lot you can work on with just your hands or just by singing the rhythms in your head.

This way, you can max out some practice time wherever you can find it.

I often suggest this to private Drum students who are so busy that they just can’t practice at all. So I say, why not practice during dinner, waiting in line for groceries or at a sporting event? If there’s a will, there’s a way!

What do you think? Do you practice in this way? What other suggestions do you have to carve out some extra practice time?
