My Last Rep as a Drumline Instructor

So the theme for this blog is last reps. Not necessarily in terms of my last rep as an instructor, but in terms of what that truly means.

To put it in the simplest terms possible, I am talking about the time you did something for the last time ever, which in this case was teaching drumlines for me.

Sometimes you have no idea when the last rep truly is going to happen either which is crazy to think about. This exact thing just happened not too long ago when this past WGI season got cut short due to covid.

So relating that back to my last rep as an instructor, my last time teaching high school drumline was back in 2013. How this came about was that I had a career in real estate that was taking off and I was not able to invest as much time as I normally do as an instructor.

This different career choice led to my final weeks as a drum instructor and ultimately, my last rep. It was a very emotional moment for me because I had been teaching this specific high school for a total of 16 years starting back in 1997.

This taught me how finite time can really be in the marching arts and in general. I was very fortunate to know when my time would be done considering.

So many alumni from over the years came out to pay their respects to me as their instructor and it was something that was truly appreciative and emotional for me. It felt very much like a final send-off moment similar to Kobe Bryant’s last game as a basketball player.

There were SO many more things that happened leading up to #mylastrep as an instructor. So if you enjoyed my story so far, watch the video below to hear the rest of my story! Also, make sure you check out Last Rep Apparel Co. at lastrep.com ;)
